Hobart's Hunter’s Street Wharf Precinct Historic Content Summary

Introduction

The Hunter’s Street Wharf Precinct is a historically rich area which is dense in content that creates links between the very beginnings of British settlement at Hobart and its spread out into the rest of Tasmania. This work will summarise the history of the Hunter’s Wharf precinct from the arrival of Lt Governor Collins, when the wharf was still on Hunters Island, through to the present day. Because of the vast amount of historic material that exists concerning this precinct and the time and size constraints required of  this work I will endeavour to summarise that material so will have to overlook a significant body of interesting historic material.

The History of a Colonial Ship: The Hope.

The Hope was built in Bristol in about 1790 and was originally employed in trading around the British colonies in the Carribean until 1820 when she was purchased by Hugh Macintosh and Peter Degraves to take their families and goods to Hobart in Van Diemen's Land. Gunns and the Gunn Brothers: A Short History of John and Thomas Gunn before they became J&T Gunn.the company.

This is a paper I presented at the UTas School of History Conferance 2009 in Launceston. It covers the period before John and Thomas Gunn began their timber business. It looks into their life before J&T Gunn and raises some interesting questions about how they raised the capital to start up J&T Gunn.
